    24th Zydeco Extravaganza Returns

    May 10, 2010

    by William Johnson
    The Daily WOrld Newspaper

    24th Annual Zydeco Extravaganza

Noon to midnight, Sunday, May 30, 2010
Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino, 2200 Creswell Lane, Opelousas
Pre-sale tickets are $15 or $20 at the gate
    www.ZydecoExtra.com

Tickets go on sale today for this year's Zydeco Extravaganza, set for Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino on May 30.

Pre-sale tickets are $15. "For that you get 13 bands, our popular accordion contest and a free T-shirt as long as supplies last," said event organizer Dustin Cravins.

Advance tickets can be purchased at the Don Cravins Insurance Agency offices in Lafayette and Opelousas.

He said the event will feature two stages: one outside for the younger, high-energy Zydeco bands, and the other a heritage stage inside at the Downs' new event center.

"We have always done an inside stage, but this is pretty cool. This stage is four times the size we've had in the past," Cravins said.

He said last year's festival brought about 4,000 visitors to the city.

Yes, Zydeco Nation, we are well into the year 2010, and Festival and Trailride Season is underway! While many people will attend at least Zydeco Festival, Church Bazaar, or Trailride with family and friends, there is one proud fact that everyone in the Zydeco Nation should remember. Although there are a few Zydeco Festivals that are organized strictly and solely as an event for personal profit, the vast majority of Creole/Zydeco Festivals, Church Bazaars and Fairs, and Trailrides in the Zydeco Nation are fundraisers for worthy causes organized and supported by churches, organizations, local businesses, and volunteers who donate their time, resources, and creative talents to keep the Zydeco Nation proud and strong!

The 6th Annual Creole Heritage Zydeco & Crawfish Festival is one of festivals in the Zydeco Nation that upholds and continues the fine tradition of grassroots philanthropic work as a major fundraiser for The Broussard Endowment Fund, while
providing a setting that has become a flash point for the Creole Heritage of Southwest Louisiana and Texas as well as great environment for people of all ages!

This year's Creole Heritage Zydeco & Crawfish Festival will take place on April 9th -10th, 2010 at the San Jacinto Mall in Baytown, Texas(Located on Garth Road at I-10 East). This year's festival will include two large covered stages, dance Floors,
dance lessons with Mona "Zydeco Queen Wilson, the talented Zydeco and Creole bands, along with delicious Creole food like Gumbo, Boudin and Etouffe.

Mardi Gras Krewe Celebrates It 38 Year!

    by Lloyd J. Nelson III
    The Houma Times

    Colin Campo/Correspondent Float decorator
Melvin J. Johnson of Thibodaux, Louisiana
works Monday on a float for the Krewe of Ghana,
which parades at 11 a.m. in Thibodaux, Louisiana.

“It’s very nice,” said Lewis, who was grand marshal of the parade in 2002 and queen in 2004. “We were the first all-black krewe in the area. It’s something to look forward to.”

It wasn’t always so, Lewis said.

“We used to watch the white parades every Tuesday,” Lewis said. “Then some krewe members threw snakes at our boys out there.”

That incident and others inspired the founding members to start their own Carnival club, Lewis said.

    www.Zydeco.org

The Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Festival is back again in its 27th year in the rural community of Plaisance, Louisiana! The first and oldest Zydeco Festival in the world, the Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Festival was founded and organized by The Treasures of Opelousas, a grassroots organization made up of local citizens from Opelousas, Louisiana who were concerned that Zydeco Music and Culture was slowly dying out.

In an effort to preserve this unique form of history and cultural expression, The Treasures of Opelousas organized The Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Festival (the first and oldest Zydeco Festival in the World) in 1981. The Treasures of Opelousas organized and maintained the Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Festival for the first 14 years until the Festival was taken over by the Southern Development Foundation, the Festivals current organizer.

Since the start to the first Zydeco Festival in 1982, Zydeco Music and Culture has grown into one of the most popular form of musical and cultural expression in the world.

The name Rockin' Dopsie is synonymous with zydeco music, but it wasn't until Dopsie Jr. was a teenager that he knew he would follow in the footsteps of his legendary father.

"When I graduated high school, my dad gave me a washboard and said, 'If you want to play with me, here's what you need.' And the money was really good, so I decided that's how I wanted to launch my career, playing behind my father," Dopsie Jr. said in a phone interview.

Even 16 years after Dopsie's death, his son and other artists have continued to keep the Louisiana-bred genre alive, bringing joy to fans all over the world.

Whether it’s at a conservative wedding or a club on a Saturday night, there is one song that is guaranteed to get the dance floor packed. That song is “Cupid Shuffle,” and although its debut was almost two years ago, this song can still be heard at parties across the nation.

Singer Bryson Bernard, also known as Cupid, had an early idea that his “Shuffle” would be such a big hit.

"I used to be a DJ at a club called the Brass Room. I taught the dance to a couple of people. It's just one of those songs that took off running. Everybody wanted to know how to teach the shuffle." Cupid said.

Not long ago, Bernard was a track athlete at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette who competed in talent contests as a way to build momentum for a professional singing career.

    Press Release

The official 2009 Opelousas Spice and Music Festival Poster
    "The Kitchen" by Jerome Ford.

(Opelousas, LA) - Jerome Ford is the local artist who created the Opelousas Spice & Music Festival’s 2009 official poster, which was unveiled during the Friday, May 15th Music & Market event in downtown Opelousas. The festival takes place June 5-7, 2009, in historic downtown Opelousas.

For the original artwork, which is titled ‘The Kitchen,” Ford used acrylic paint, paper, slate, and birch wood. An artist as well as a Talented Visual Arts Instructor for St. Landry Parish Schools, he describes his work as cultural impressionism.

Ford, who was born and raised in New Orleans' lower ninth ward, grew up surrounded by entrepreneurs of various trades. Growing up, he and his brothers and sisters learned that creativity and a strong, work ethic could go a long way. “We built everything from go-carts and bikes, to roller coasters,” says Ford.

    Toggle Content What is Zydeco?
Zydeco Music is a unique form of musical expression that originated in rural southwest Louisiana. Locally known as "la la" music, Zydeco music was formed and forged in a time best forgotten--a time when African-Americans had to struggle in the fields from sunup to sundown as sharecroppers so that their children might reap a better life.

It was these backbreaking hard times that help to define one of the most vibrant and successful musical traditions in the world. The phrase "Zydeco sont pas sale'" means "The snapbeans are not Salty" in Creole French, and the music draws upon French, Creole, West African, Cajun, Caribbean, and R & B musical traditions. Zydeco Music is characterized by the use of the accordion, spoons, scrubboard, fiddle and triangle.
