John "J.B." Broussard and Melvin "MC" Ceasar keep Creole Culture alive on the Radio

    November 27, 2008

John "J.B." Broussard and Melvin "MC" Ceasar host Zydeco Est Pas Sale every Saturday morning from 7:00am to 12:00pm. http://zydecowebbers.homestead.com

The most wonderful thing happens every Saturday morning at 7 a.m. People all over the world are listening to zydeco music on UL's KRVS 88.7 FM radio station via the Internet.

Both the East and West Coasts are getting in on the action. People in Australia are getting up in the middle of the night. Zydeco est pas sale!

Public radio stations such as KRVS develop programming that reflects the culture of their locales and projects the same to their listeners. This is a tremendous public service and is a local effort to preserve our Cajun and Creole heritages.

The proud Creole culture of Acadiana is rooted in and based on love of family and tradition. No one loves it more than the show's hosts, Melvin Caesar and John Broussard, who learned to dance while standing on his mother's feet. The pride they feel for our culture is on display for the world to see every Saturday morning. And they freely share their knowledge concerning the historical development of zydeco with listeners.

The king of zydeco, Clifton Chenier, coined the French term "zydeco" or "snap bean" to characterize the unique flavor and rhythm of the music. Recordings as early as 1955 reveal the rhythmic style, but as time passed, the music gained punch, and Chenier earned international renown for his prowess on the accordion and devotion to Creole culture.

I'll never forget watching him at Jay's in Cankton during the '70s play his accordion, sing and look the audience right in the eye with a grin. Of course, this was going on while the cockfights were happening in the back.

The power of music to bring people together, regardless of race, never ceases to amaze me. For the most part, zydeco music is clean (contentwise) and perfectly suited for dancing if you are physically able (which I am not).

Thanks again, John Broussard, Melvin Caesar and KRVS, for sharing your knowledge and love of our Creole culture here in Acadiana with all of us and the world at large.

Cynthia Labutka lives in Lafayette with her husband and two teenagers.

    Toggle Content What is Zydeco?
Zydeco Music is a unique form of musical expression that originated in rural southwest Louisiana. Locally known as "la la" music, Zydeco music was formed and forged in a time best forgotten--a time when African-Americans had to struggle in the fields from sunup to sundown as sharecroppers so that their children might reap a better life.

It was these backbreaking hard times that help to define one of the most vibrant and successful musical traditions in the world. The phrase "Zydeco sont pas sale'" means "The snapbeans are not Salty" in Creole French, and the music draws upon French, Creole, West African, Cajun, Caribbean, and R & B musical traditions. Zydeco Music is characterized by the use of the accordion, spoons, scrubboard, fiddle and triangle.
