Officials and trail ride sponsors will be meeting today in an effort to see what can be done to preserve the tradition.
The meeting, which will include parish government officials and representatives of the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, was prompted by the parish pulling the permit for this weekend’s Country Bunnies Trail Ride based out of the IFBS Lodge on La. 31 in the Leonville area.

cancelled the Country Bunnie Riders Event over Fears of a Brawl
The Country Bunnie Riders trail ride, set for this weekend in Leonville, has been canceled by orders of St. Landry Parish government for fear of a brawl.
That move could shut down trail rides in the parish entirely.
The event was set to begin Friday evening at the IFBS Lodge on La. 31 just southeast of Opelousas with the party expected to continue through Saturday. The trail ride portion of the event was to be held Sunday.
“It is not going to happen,” said Sheriff Bobby Guidroz. “If they show up, they will be in violation, and I will take appropriate action.”

Joseph Vernon Turner Jr
"Big Joe Turner" "The Boss Of The Blues"
Rock & Roll Pioneer
May 18, 1911 – November 24, 1985
Joseph Vernon Turner Jr., known to the Zydeco, Southern Soul, and Blues Nation as “Big Joe Turner” and “The Boss of the Blues” was born on Thursday, May 18, 1911 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was given the name "Big Joe Turner" due to his 6'2", 300+ lbs stature.
Big Joe Turner was known as a prolific "blues shouter" (a blues-music singer capable of singing unamplified with a band) and is credited with and recognized as the first person to transform the “Blues” into a new musical genre called “Rock & Roll.” His signature songs “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” “Flip, Flop and Fly” and “Corrine, Corrina,” became the foundations in which Rock & Roll was built. As Muddy Waters eloquently sang in his anthemic song, “The Blues Had a Baby and They Named It Rock and Roll.”

Irma Thomas, the Soul Queen of New Orleans, reigned over an enthusiastic crowd Sunday when she took to the stage for the 30th anniversary of Mother’s Day at the Audubon Zoo.
Before Thomas performed, she was presented with 30 pink roses in honor of the years she has entertained for Mother’s Day at the zoo. She was also given two oversized Mother’s Day cards signed by fans earlier in the afternoon.
“We cannot express in words what you mean to us,” said Chimene Grant, vice president of marketing for the Audubon Nature Institute.

Despite objections, FCC approves KCOH license transfer
February 7, 2013
By David Barron
The Federal Communications Commission has approved the license transfer of KCOH (1430 AM) to the Midland-based La Promesa Foundation, clearing the way for the new owners to launch their Catholic-oriented Guadalupe Radio Network on the frequency.
The license transfer was approved Wednesday despite informal objections filed with the FCC's audio division by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. Both expressed concerns about the "potential disappearance of KCOH's existing format" and about media ownership diversity, said the audio division's chief, Peter Doyle, in a letter to attorneys concerning the license transfer.

November 13, 2012

KCOH (1430 AM), which bills itself as the state’s oldest African-American-owned, urban-formatted radio station, has been sold for $2.1 million to a Midland-based foundation that will re-launch it next year as part of the Catholic-oriented Guadalupe Radio Network, two longtime station employees said Tuesday.
The format change means longtime talk show hosts Michael Harris, Ralph Cooper, Don Samuel, Wash Allen and others will no longer appear on the station.

Bryant T. Broussard comes from a family steeped in
Cajun and zydeco traditions. He and his band,
T-Broussard and the Zydeco Steppers, will headline
Cajun Fest Saturday in downtown Wichita Falls.
Zydeco is dancing music, not sit-down music, said Bryant T. Broussard, leader of T-Broussard & the Zydeco Steppers.
“Even if you don’t know how to zydeco (dance), you’re still going to jump up there and pat your feet and bob your head, because it’s that kind of music,” said Broussard.
His five-piece, Louisiana-based zydeco band will headline from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the Downtown Cajun Festival.

I’m disappointed and excited that Andre Thierry is performing this weekend at the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival. The disappointment is Thierry plays so early – 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Saturday on the Crawfish Stage. Some party people are just rolling out of bed at that time.
Yet I’m excited that many here in south Louisiana, ground zero for zydeco, will finally get to see one of the genre’s most dynamic musicians. Thierry, 33, lives in Richmond, Calif., and rarely gets to play in Louisiana, the homeland of his parents and grandparents.
But he’s keeping zydeco fans and Creole communities in California and beyond well entertained.

The excitement built on the final day of Festival International de Louisiane on Sunday as the weather held and gave way to a groundswell of music lovers who stayed until the last note was played.
At Lil’ Nathan & the Zydeco Big Timers, about 5:30 p.m. at Scene Lafayette General Fais Do Do, a crowd stretched down Jefferson Street past Main Street. Many still managed to find room to dance — in the streets, on the sidewalks or in the grass.

Allen Toussaint called Paul “Lil’ Buck” Sinegal the “Gentle Giant of Guitar.” But get him reminiscing about his 50 years in music and the laid-back Lil Buck often leaps to his feet, hands moving, arms flailing and his tongue flip-flopping between English and Creole French.
“When Big Joe Turner walked onstage, that man was huge,” says Sinegal, 66, a lifelong resident of Lafayette. “When he did ‘Shake Rattle and Roll,’ the stage was doing the same thing.”

Lil' Buck Sinegal Keeps the Blues Tradition Strong!
April 29, 2013
By Alison Fensterstock
Paul "Lil Buck" Sinegal
Saturday morning (and early afternoon) at New Orleans Jazz Fest, the Blues Tent offered a triple threat of ace sidemen, from the back pages of Louisiana rock 'n'roll. Classie Ballou, who played guitar for Boozoo Chavis, Roscoe Gordon and Big Joe Turner, among others, opened the day with his family band. Herbert Hardesty, Fats Domino's longtime sax man (who, in 2012, released his first solo album) followed.
At 1:30 p.m., it was guitarist Lil Buck Sinegal's turn, leading a big R&B band with a horn section, keyboards and daughter Sherelle on rub board and percussion. Some local music fans may recall Buck as the anchor of the annual Ponderosa Stomp concerts, leading the house band for stretches of many hours at a time as they backed headliners. Those marathon shows were nothing to the septuagenarian guitar slinger, who spent many years on the road as the secret weapon in the band of zydeco king Clifton Chenier, a famously tough taskmaster; he's also played with Henry Gray, Buckwheat Zydeco, and others, and honed his skill as a session man on dozens of sides for the Excello label.

It’s a tough task to excite a musician who’s performed in 45 countries, appeared in movies and shared the stage and studio with Paul Simon, Robert Palmer and other stars. Yet Terrance Simien is almost giddy when talking about Queen Ida, an artist who draws a shrug from today’s zydeco fans.
Queen Ida, 84, retired in 2010 and hasn’t played in Louisiana in more than 25 years. But in 1982, she became the first zydeco artist to win a Grammy. She toured internationally when zydeco was rarely heard outside southwest Louisiana and Creole enclaves in southeast Texas and California.
“Just think about it, she was on Saturday Night Live,” said Simien.

Music and Market will be taking its show on the road tonight.
The free concert series, which will feature the music of Horace Trahan & the Ossun Express tonight, will be held under the oaks on Courthouse Square in downtown Opelousas.
“We try to do this a couple of times a year,” said Melanie Lebouef with the Opelousas Tourism Office, which hosts the weekly series.
“It is all about showing off our cultural assets,” said Lebouef, who said people can picnic under the live oaks, admire the dozens of fiddles on display around the courthouse and visit the murals on Landry Street.
Although the event is moving from its usual home at the Farmers Market Pavilion in Le Vieux Village, she said it will have all the usual features, including a farmers market with fresh garden produce direct from local farmers.
The farmers market, complete with free samples of dishes prepared from this week’s featured vegetable, will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The music portion of the evening will begin at 6 p.m. and continue until 8:30 p.m.

10 Cesar Chavez quotes:
The man he was and the legacy that lives on!

Cesar Chavez March 31,1927 - April 23, 1993
Cesar Chavez was an American farm worker, labor leader
and civil rights activist, who, with Dolores Huerta, co-founded
the National Farm Workers Association.
Cesar Chavez would have been 86 years old today and in recent years, he has emerged as an icon for the immigration reform movement. But before that, he was a farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activist. Google recognized his significance by featuring him on their homepage, something they only do on major occasions.

Classie Ballou: Boozoo’s Bottom
Zydeco & Blues Bass Guitarist A Living Legend
Reprint from October 1, 2011
Interview by D'Jalma Garnier and Todd Mouton
Classie Ballou, Jr. Photo by Philip Gould.
In the world of zydeco, the accordionists and front men are the names in lights. But like R&B and funk, in zydeco the bass players are living legends. Classie Ballou, Jr. brought the bottom end of zydeco out of the late ’50s and early ’60s into a new standard.
Before his long, infamous tenure with Boozoo Chavis and the Magic Sounds, Ballou played with WAR and Archie Bell and the Drells. He continues today with Jeffery Broussard and the Creole Cowboys and many other bands. He was interviewed at Louisiana Folk Roots’ annual Dewey Balfa Cajun and Creole Heritage Week at Chicot State Park by Todd Mouton and D’Jalma Garnier, who will join Ballou and Broussard onstage for a similar “words and music” workshop at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 16 as part of Festivals Acadiens et Cre´oles in Lafayette’s Girard Park.

Contemporary Blues Master Lived The Blues Life!
March 1, 2013
By Carlo Rotella
Magic Slim was a contemporary of blues greats
Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf who helped shape the
sound of the Chicago blues.
DO YOURSELF a favor. Go to YouTube and search for “Magic Slim Goin’ to Mississippi Blind Pig 2011.” The video shows blues fundamentalist Magic Slim recording a song with his band, the Teardrops, in the warehouse of his record label two years ago. He was still going strong then at age 73, despite chronic heart and lung ailments. In the video he plays a straight blues shuffle, the kind of thing played every day by millions of musicians all over the world. But it’s a shuffle done right, a form lastingly codified in the 1950s during the golden age of Chicago blues and perfected by Magic Slim over the course of a musical lifetime. And a shuffle played right is a truly satisfying — and deceptively rare — thing.

Morris "Magic Slim" Holt "Blues Great!"
August 7, 1937 - February 21, 2013
Rest In Peace
With the passing of Magic Slim we say farewell to one of the greatest traditional Chicago blues artists of our time. Magic Slim died of complications from a breathing disorder after weeks of hospitalization. He was 75.
Though a great singer, guitarist and band leader, it was Magic Slim's undeniable personality that set him apart. He could play heartfelt, rough and tumble Chicago blues with a zest that was unmatched. Every part of Magic Slim's being was the blues - his geographical path, his hard partying, fun loving personality, and his far traveling, dedicated lifestyle.

Zydeco Music is a unique form of musical expression that originated in rural southwest Louisiana. Locally known as "la la" music, Zydeco music was formed and forged in a time best forgotten--a time when African-Americans had to struggle in the fields from sunup to sundown as sharecroppers so that their children might reap a better life.
It was these backbreaking hard times that help to define one of the most vibrant and successful musical traditions in the world. The phrase "Zydeco sont pas sale'" means "The snapbeans are not Salty" in Creole French, and the music draws upon French, Creole, West African, Cajun, Caribbean, and R & B musical traditions. Zydeco Music is characterized by the use of the accordion, spoons, scrubboard, fiddle and triangle.
